John Lennon concert

Watched parts of the John Lennon concert on tv yesterday. The bits where they showed videos of him and his tiny kid was especially touching. I especially liked listening to his ‘Stand by me’ song after a long time. However, my favourite song by John Lennon will always be this:

Nobody loves you when you’re down and out
Nobody sees you when you’re on cloud nine
Everybody’s hustlin’ for a buck and a dime
I’ll scratch your back and you scratch mine

I’ve been across to the other side
I’ve shown you everything, I got nothing to hide
And still you ask me do I love you, what it is, what it is
All I can tell you is it’s all show biz
All I can tell you is it’s all show biz

Nobody loves you when you’re down and out
Nobody knows you when you’re on cloud nine
Everybody’s hustlin’ for a buck and a dime
I’ll scratch your back and you knife mine

And so on…

A spell of random thoughts!

60 years of Independance

india_flags.JPG

We celebrate 60 years of Indian Independance tomorrow. This reminds me of Bill Pullman’s speech in the movie Independance Day:

We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive! Today we celebrate … our Independence Day!

Am proud to be an Indian and to be a part of this glorious country.

14th August 2007

Happy 60th Independance Day to Pakistan.

Today’s also my late father’s birthday. I remember me & my brother singing him Happy birthday to you as he cut his birthday cake with tears in his eyes about 7 or 8 years back. Truly a remarkable man and he lives on in my memory.

Hot hot hot

It is so hot here you can fry an egg on top of my head, that is, if I am unlucky enough to be out of the air conditioning and enter the world of behavourial conditioning (which I have been doing since the last one week)

Sometime back, a friend of mine reminisced Do you remember ten years ago, we used to wear sweaters throughout the year in Gangtok? And to think right now, I am that very chicken on the right side sweating it out in this hotter-than-hell place.

This global warming is slowly smothering life away. And it will get worse if we dont Live Earth and Answer the Call. Way to go, fellow earthlings!

A driving force

I was in my second year of college when my best pal invited me to a trip to her house in Cochin. So both of us made a five hour journey all the way from Calicut to her place to be greeted very warmly by her wonderful mum, Amma. Looking back, I cant help but wonder what a Super Mom she really is. She’s a doctor by profession and an amazing cook who used to feed us dosas, idlis, puttus, appams and what not at breakfast! Yumm…. Now this is a really big deal since now that I’m also working, I can only manage to provide bread & eggs for breakfast. Thats why I really appreciate her culinary skills & time management especially at rush hour!

Amma is also a very good driver not to mention an excellent mom. I remember her taking us & the girls to Weekender and other places for shopping trips which we simply enjoyed. She drove us all over MG Road in Cochin and I remember thinking Wow! I’m sure there are few moms who’ll indulge their kids (and their friends) so much!

When our trip finally did get over, she drove us to the railway station and packed us a big bundle of marble cake and biryani for lunch. I still remember her clearly standing at the station waving us off, looking so pretty in her sari. What a Complete Woman!

A few years later, when I finished college and got back home, the first thing I demanded my dad was that I wanted to learn how to drive the car. He pointed me to a driving school and paid my fees following which I finally learnt how to drive and there’s been no looking back ever since.

Four years later, here I am today – I believe I am an experienced enough driver, excluding one memory of a terrible crash but yeah, you live and you learn. These days, when I drive my car to office, I cant help but remember Amma who undoubtably inspired me to get driving. Hats off to her and I love her as much for being my real-life idol :)

I have to get this off my chest before I explode

1. I am so guilty for hogging the summer away and putting on weight, if thats possible – there, I said it. Whew! That dude on the couch looks overtly familiar to me….

2. I have to do some work around here to prove that I am not getting paid for nothing. (Hope my boss doesnt see this)

3. Havent taken Winkie Poo for her daily morning walks in months. Oh no!!! Is Maneka Gandhi reading this?

4. Havent met friends, called them or socialized with anyone for ages and I am tired of being stuck on the island with no rescue boat in sight…

5. I am addicted to this blogging thing. I blame Shaliya for this last point though :D

F.I.V.E. am

Yesterday morning I woke up at 5 am to finish some work over and beyond its deadline. As I looked around, the world looked incredibly beautiful and fresh that I couldnt help but promise myself that I would wake up at 5 am each morning to take in the eary morning fresh air and start my day bright and early.

So today morning I woke up thinking Wow, I managed to wake up at 5 again without the alarm clock ; thats when I saw that it was 7:30 am and I was once again late to reach office. Sigh.

Sacred Games

This book by Vikram Chandra has more than 800 pages with small fonts. I read a third of it. Wondering if finishing the book is worth the effort…

The bad guy is the don who apparently inspires the latest Bollywood mafia movies, it seems. The way he killed his enemy was portrayed in four different movies or so he says. To tell you the truth, I cant lift up the hard bound copy that much or else I would have read it much faster, I think!

Sweet stuff

Some of my students brought back sweets for me from their home after summer break. Very sweet of them and hopefully this will not buy them any preferrential treatment in class, if you know what I’m talking about :)

One of my ex-students from Andhra Pradesh, Harsha Teja always used to bring my favourite Mysore Pak from home after each vacation. Even though he passed out this year, he still sent back a packet for me through his junior. No wonder he is one of my favourite students….

At this point, I throw caution and heed for calories into the wind and dig in the sweet stuff. Yumm…
