About a simple man

There is this old gentleman who’s the chowkidar of the Institute I work in. He’s a taciturn, helpful fellow who’s Omnipresent in my opinion. Almost anyone and everyone needs him for one thing or the other and he’s always there carrying out whatever instruction has been freshly issued to him. He’s the first person I see when I reach the Institute and the last one on my way out at the end of the day.

Not only does he carry out his duties during the working days, he is also there whenever the occasional packages are dropped off during holidays and vacations. Sometimes I wonder what we would all do if he wasnt there in the first place.

He gifted me a plant when I was moving to my new house and used to unfailingly bring me my tea every morning at 11 am sharp, that is before the Institute decided we had enough of free tea and should henceforth get our cuppa coffee from the vending machine.

I like the way his face breaks into a toothy grin whenever we share a joke; the wrinkles on his face accentuating the years which took a toll on him. I admire his perseverance and his dedication to doing his job the best possible way he can. I am yet to take a leaf out of his book for the better though.

Blogpane

I was going through the Blog Referral tools in my site when I realized that I was listed on Blogpane. Quite a multitude of people from my old Alma Mater blogging, not surprisingly, from seniors to juniors and ex-juniors after my time. Nice work.

I found this pic listed under ‘Funny Pictures” in that Dot Com site. I didnt find it THAT funny. Its sad, although definitely not funny in my opinion.

Books et all

These days, I am into a marathon book reading of sorts. It dont matter which author when I find myself finishing up one book only to pick up the next. It all started with Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows – THE book which I read twice, then switched over to Sons of Fortune by Jeffery Archer. Unputdownable was an understatement when the first thing I did in the morning was reach out for the book and devour it for two hours before I had to finally leave for dratted work.

Next came The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger. What a funny book! Reminded me a little of Ugly Betty so it was rather amusing to read about devilish co-workers and imagining Betty Suarez’s mishaps in the Mode office. That being done, I realized that I wanted to read a little bit of effortless thriller and what better than Sidney Sheldon’s Are you afraid of the dark.

I have two more Jeffery Archer’s novels lined up as well as a Pulitzer winning best-selling novel, The Colour Purple by Alice Walker – this book was lent so graciously by a fellow book worm-tail on whom I can count to recommend other Unputdownables. (She lent me The Devil Wears Prada too)

On an after thought, I think I will finally have to reacharge my Tata Sky connection. Its either that or – spoil my eyes – as they say!

Watching movies

My friend, who’s got a good ear for music btw, always puts on some new song or the other and I’m forever telling him – I dont want to listen to newbies, I want the good old familiar songs that I can sing along with. This is when he shakes his head and gives up trying to introduce me to new stuff. Same’s the case with movies – I’d rather watch my faves than some new fangled, fantabulous hot shot movie thats wowed the world. Give me Matilda, Starsky & Hutch, Billy Madison any day.

Of course, I love the new Harry Potter movies just like the next Rowling fan…. although the same cant be said for all the new releases. Like the last time I watched the third Pirates of the Carribean movie, I was left wondering whats happening to whom and from where. My brother who was sitting next to me remarked snidely – this is what happens when you miss the ending of the first Pirate movie and dont watch the second part!

Speaking of movies, I am still yet to watch Chak De which has got pretty good reviews esp from one Chak De fan who’s going to watch the movie second time tonight ;)

Classic Chandler

Ross: I dont know what I’m gonna do. What am I gonna do? I mean, this… this is like a complete nightmare!!!

Chandler: Oh, I dont know, this must be so hard. “Oh no! Two women love me! They’re both gorgeous and sexy! My wallet’s too small for my fifties and my diamond shoes are too tight!”

:)

About days of yore

Recently, an old classmate emailed an album of our college days and going through it was like looking at ghosts from a previous life. Not only was I thinner in college (!!!) but recollections of Oh, this person had also studied with me went rampant in my mind. People I had forgotten all about and perhaps would have never remembered again had it not been for those old photos.

Most of the time I went through the old album, I was like God, when were these pics taken??? I dont even remember such a thing happening. And now that I look back, I think I was pretty much in a world of my own and not paying any attention to things going on at that time. Pretty much the same thats happening now, I guess ;)

I was in very few pictures of that old album, not surprisingly. Most of the other pictures were taken in our old classroom or on some trip to somewhere - on mountains, tea gardens, inside the bus. Smiling, happy people, including ex-couples sitting besides each other. One hell of a nostalgic trip down memory lane, thanks to the old classmate of mine.

The last thing I remember thinking was – did she really have a digital camera ten years ago?

14 things that took me over 50 years to learn by Dave Barry

  1. Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
  2. If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be “meetings.”
  3. There is a very fine line between “hobby” and “mental illness.”
  4. People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want you to share yours with them.
  5. You should not confuse your career with your life.
  6. Nobody cares if you can’t DANCE well. Just get up and dance.
  7. Never lick a steak knife.
  8. The most destructive force in the universe is gossip.
  9. You will never find anybody who can give you a clear and compelling reason why we observe daylight savings time.
  10. You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely suggests that you think she’s pregnant unless you can see an actual baby emerging from her at that moment.
  11. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday. That time is age eleven.
  12. The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside, we ALL believe that we are above-average drivers.
  13. A person who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice person. (This is very important. Pay attention. It never fails.)
  14. Your friends love you anyway.
