The F word

The F word? I know we’re offended by it. Most of us, including me, dont use it on a regular basis. But making a big deal out of it at the end of a rock show is ridiculous. Wait, its more than that – its fucking ridiculous. Especially when that band was Pentagram, made famous by Vishal (of the Vishal-Shekhar duo who’s making sappy bollywood songs compared to this band’s music, I now realize)

I’m not a major Pentagram fan, I admit. Because I havent really listened to them much before. But I like music concerts even though to my sorrow, I live in a concert-starved place unlike some of you lucky people living in the metros.

So when a local college invites a prestigious national band to perform in their fest, I usually hunt down my friends working there and extort passes from them each year.

The show kicked off by Vishal saying:

I know you guys are respectable professors (crowd booing!) and shit but at a Pentagram show, no body sits down. (I cheered) So you have two choices, either you guys can – (quick rethink) – I humbly request you to please stand and join this party with us!

The concert was fun. The band mostly played their original compositions some of which I’d never heard before but it was tremendously interesting watching them perform. Vishal rocks! I think I love him.

Especially since he apologised later about using abusive language. He said that he meant no insult to anyone and certainly had not directed the stream of obscenities to any one in person.

Not that it stopped him from saying stuff like:

This is the greatest motherfucking country in the world. (Wild cheer from the crowd)

Pentagram is the coolest motherfucking band in the world. (We all agreed in the heat of the moment, so more cheering)

And you guys are the loudest bastards of the world!!! (Maybe not the ones seated still but the rest of us sure agreed)

After a lot of mind-blowing music, pearls of wisdom from Vishal like *** Great fucking night, drink and fight *** when a fight broke out somewhere near the entrance, 2000 people singing We dont need no education and the show winds up sometime around midnight.

We thought there was nothing more to see but then someone goes on stage and makes a strong comment on how we cannot say things like ‘motherfucking country’ and that a renowned, national band should know better than to use abusive language especially when they’re performing in an educational institution.

I knew then and there that Pentagram wouldnt be invited for an encore performance next year.

And I dont think they’d want to especially after what happened next.

The lecture about the F word had just ended when the lead guitarist runs on stage with a mike and says something like this:

I disagree because I think fuck is a very cool word in our generation. We’re not trying to insult anyone or trying to teach…

Thats when the mike is snatched away and he is told, We are the teachers. You leave the teaching to us. Now please go from here.

I was stunned. The said band member was ushered off the stage and thankfully, no further unpleasant incident occurred. At least not in front of us audience.

What an ending! I’ve been to rock shows with a difference but this one took the cake.

While I can understand the (very unpopular view) of the opposition at that point of time, its unfortunate that the show ended with such a spectacle and on such a note.

Maybe if you dont want such foul-mouthing bad ass rock stars to pollute the minds of the young, better not invite them next time onwards. Or best, leave the show the moment you feel uncomfortable. Or maybe you can listen closely for the apology that was already made before the show got over.

We are sorry, Pentagram. Hope this wont be your last performance ever in Sikkim.

And yeah, oie teachers, LEAVE PENTAGRAM ALONE!

  • “We dont need no thot control… hey teachers leave the kids alone….”

  • Dark sarcasm in the classroom >>> I do this sometimes :)

Update: But very few of them get it, I guess.

  • I think I am old.
I am sure I would have enjoyed the show 10 years back. But now I feel irritated when people use the F word just to sound cool.

I once went to a stand-up comedy where this guy was so generous with the F word, he inserted one after every 2 other words and would always start and end a sentence with one. I had a headache at the end of the show.

  • I always loved the creepy energy of the rock music, and sure you don’t want to hear the F word in any other languages, but if it’s in English you gotta love it. lol.

  • @GWBE – How can you be old? You’re younger than me!!!

We shall agree to disagree :)

@Saran – Yeap, I think so too. And yeah, the show was rocking!

  • Hmmm … like u said, I can understand the other side too … All I can say is that those teachers are surely better than Mr Muthalik’s men :)

    Unfortunate … thats it

  • Hi Rinchen

“”Thats when the mike is snatched away and he is told, We are the teachers. You leave the teaching to us. Now please go from here”"

Thats when the show reached its climax…….lol.

Not everyday u get such drama at a rock concert.

    Lucky girl you are.

    Happy Blogging

  • @Sandeep – Kinda reminds me of Valentine’s Day celebration 1999 when the emcee announced “I request the couples…” too many times on the mic. And the student dean turned up at the Audi and shut down the party asap :P

@IP – Hahaha… I found it funny only after you mentioned it. Yeah, you dont get to witness such drama everyday :)

  • I sure did miss all the drama :(
I agree with Saran, the F word in any other language is repugnant, but in english its just a word :) , which I liberally used during my college days :)

  • Hehe.. I avoid the Pink Floyd song like the plague. I hate it from the bottom of my heart. But it just is so apt in this scenario.

Go to today’s NITC, you will see scarier stuff.

  • Lemme just say “Foutre Vous” to that party pooper :D

I feel the word sounds good in English and in French. Then again the french can make anything sound good!!!

  • Hey btw your new header is awesome!!!

  • See, I love Eminem’s albums and Martin Scorsese underworld movies. I don’t mind the goras using the ‘mofo’ word. In India, I’d hate to see someone use that. As regards the word ‘fuck’, it can be used as an expression because it is a beautiful word that can bring out various emotions (check out Osho’s speech on the word ‘fuck’). To use the word just to sound cool is plain stupidity.

  • It surely is such a loved word of the generation! Not much in my place, though! :)
(yeah we are too divine people!)

  • Wow! What a way to end a rock show! I guess they were just trying to be cool :-)

Just love that chant, “We dont need no education” by Pink Floyd

    Keep Blogging!

  • Umm… my blog moved to a new server and while Sushubh (who manages my blog) packed all its bags properly, some of the comments got left behind in the old server :)

So after I finally understood what was going on, I took the liberty of moving your comments here, hence the timings :P

Sorry for the confusion if any or at least hope it was just me!

  • Humorous Rinch. Now I know what to expect in a music concert. I will be staying away from them or I will be like the teacher.

  • I may sound outdated but i too think that the usage of “f……” word jus to sound cool is so uncool. We have become so blind in the name of being with”The In-Thing”.

  • @Sree – :P

@Paden – I agree; some of the kids cheered just because they heard the F word. Not cool.

  • Wow, I can’t believe the lead guitarist said that. What is really cool about “fuck”?

And what did they exactly mean by “This is the greatest motherfucking country in the world” ?!

  • Damn. I can’t believe this actually happened!! Why the fuck did they organize the rock show, they should have invited Bhupen Hazarika or Pandit Ravi Shankar or some local veena-vadaks or maadal-men.

Perhaps the faculty of that educational institution should be sent to participate in Mood I once. They will learn a lot! Did this happen in Manipal?

I have been to couple of Pentagram concerts during college days. They light up the show man!

And you already know whats getting me defensive. The word is very much a part of my lingo. Its the best word to summarize most of the things, be it constructive or unconstructive. Now I suddenly remember your better half looking at you the first few times when I used the word when we met for eid lunch. Can’t blame him – that was the first time we met. :P

  • @Vinay – The teacher also asked the very same questions and shut down everything before anyone could answer.

@Shaliya – Yep, yep and yep. Bhupen Hazarika would have been ideal, otherwise :P

Man, yours is the longest comment of them all! Not surprised. And by the way, He likes you very much and cant stop talking about you :)

  • I’m with Vinay in the coolness factor. There is nothing cool about the word “fuck”. Although I don’t mind using it strictly to vent out my frustration.

  • I’m with you in the second reasoning :)

  • Haha… remember that show like anything. I was there present backstage while all this was happening. LOL… at the heat of the moment it was all fun, though the common refrain throughout the college was that Vishal overdid it a little.
But surely one hell of an experience.

PS: Guys in the college are looking forward to an classical music encore next time. Wanna join in?
