Bhutan

I want to visit Bhutan. My friend did last week and she said that the people there are very hospitable, friendly and helpful. She talked about huge, red apples being sold for 30 rupees/kilo and the hotels being run by local families. When they asked for the bill at checking out time, the owner said – How many plates of food did you have? Its okay, just pay an approximate amount. Quite unbelievable.

Almost every business in Bhutan is run by women. It is a very safe place to visit. The cops are extremely smart and incapable of bribes. And also , Bhutanese people know hindi and are major Bollywood fans!

I then got a copy of a Bhutanese movie called Travellers and Magicians which deals with a young government official, trapped in a remote outpost – harbouring a dream to escape to America. Loved the movie and fell in love with this wonderful place called Bhutan. Want to go there soon.

  • I’ve been wanting to visit Bhutan or I should say Thimphu. As I have been to many border towns of Bhutan. The difference is stark between Phunsoling and Jalgaon (India) even though only a gate separates the two place. Made so many plans till date but none has materialized :(

  • Yep, so I’ve heard. I’m now a major fan so want to visit soon.

  • Wish you good luck.

Now there is one more person who would love to go there. Me:)

  • Aw. I want to come to Sikkim :(

  • See you both then :)

  • Even I want to come to Sikkim! My friend visited recently and I was telling him that I had a friend there and that I might go. ;)

Bhutan, interesting..I know very little abt the place. I’ll wait for your travelogue :)

  • Ha! I’ll take care this time the travelogue isnt half baked and incomplete! :)

  • Jaanu parcha next time la. Been my wish too! the best thing is that we can actually drive up all the way!
I had an interesting conversation with a Bhutanese guy I met in the Bagdogra-Delhi flight while returning. Pretty much like us, except for his exceptional knowledge in Bollywood! LOL. He kept asking me about one Salman Khan – Preity Zinta movie that he loves. I am still guessing the name of that movie. LOL. He was happily watching Om-Shanti-Om for the 15th time in the flight! For me, the subtitles acted like a dope. Translation of Om-Shanti-Om song was so hillarious, God-Peace-God! Imagine! I had a ball no doubts!

  • We were supposed to visit Bhutan this vacation but couldnt go. Planning for this winter vacations. For sure.

So they’re major Bollywood fans! Hahaha… seems whenever famous Hollywood celebs like Richard Gere and all visit Bhutan, the locals dont pay them any attention. But if its Shah Rukh Khan they’re talking about, they go fida on him.

This just in – they’re planning to rope in King Khan for the coronation ceremony of the new king soon!

  • Don’t go please.. I am getting familiar with Bagdogra. Yet to decide Bombay Bagdogra or Delhi Bagdogra.

  • Hey, most of my friends used to opt for *metro city* to Calcutta by air and then from Calcutta to New Jalpaiguri by train which just takes overnight. But that of course works out only in you have enough time. Check that out, see if it makes a difference.

  • Thanks for that. I will check it out.

  • Me too. I want to visit and if possible, settle there after retirement. But I am yet to decide between Mysore and Thimpu :-)

They have a concept called Gross National Happiness (Derived by the previous King, assuming that the coronation is over), which takes all aspects of the well being and happiness of the population concerned instead of measuring the advancement of an economy by GNP which is only an indication of the goods produced and hence the money that circulates. I think health care and education are free for every one and they preserve their forests and green cover. More I learn about the last Shangri La, more I want to visit. Let us hope some day….

    Destination Infinity

  • Yes, I heard the coronation got over recently. I did not know about the GNH! The health care and education are free all right. It seems there’s a careful screening process of every applicant for admission to its universities. Like, no relative must have left the country and settled abroad and stuff. And if you turn into a drug addict, there warnings hence, you are jailed!

Am planning to visit this December, hopefully. :)
